Designing Love’s Labour’s Lost.
In the run up to the opening night of Love’s Labour’s Lost, designer Katie Sykes provides us with a brief glimpse into the design process for the production.
‘The inspiration for the design came from our idea that the whole play is about make believe. The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse also has such a strong aesthetic itself that I wanted to respond to that rather than try and fight it. I’ve been inspired by classic fairy tale illustrations, toy theatres and pop up books.
We’ve been lucky enough to make nearly everything from scratch which means all the costumes can be hand painted and the wigs are all made from fabric too. Many amazing makers have come on board with their ideas and enthusiasm – it has been a real privilege and honour to collaborate with them all.’
